A client recently asked me, “What mistakes do you see business owners making the most when it comes to IT and cybersecurity?” 

Where should I begin? 

After many years of working with businesses of various sizes, what I see repeatedly is IT and Cybersecurity being treated as an afterthought. Even though the evidence of data breaches is clear and, in the news, the risk of a cybersecurity event is underestimated. Business owner after business owner puts together some basic protection and assumes this will be enough. This is not enough to protect against the risk of a cyberattack. A single breach, ransomware or other cybersecurity event can cripple most businesses overnight. Given all this information companies are still taking a reactive approach. They only make IT security a priority after something goes wrong. This is even more work than doing it correctly from the start and it is also more expensive. 

There is a lot of free software available in the marketplace. Some businesses think that this is a good solution to protect against cybersecurity attacks. Small businesses also use consumer grade network equipment. This is being done in an effort to keep costs down. However, few businesses understand the cost of suffering a data breach. You can face compliance fines or lose client trust. If you are not willing to risk running your business on a free spreadsheet app, why would you trust your security infrastructure to cheap or free software?  

In talking with business owners, I have asked the question of what downtime costs their business. Not many could give me a concrete answer. Many businesses assume they can be down for a short time, if there was an IT issue. But what happens when your network goes down for several hours or even days. Customers are affected and lose the service they rely on and suddenly the business is hemorrhaging money. A well thought out plan is needed to ensure operations continue even if there is a disaster. IT does not only entail security.  

Cybersecurity is an ever-evolving situation. It is not a onetime set it and forget it configuration. As threats evolve so does the solution. It requires a team that is proactive and is constantly monitoring and reinforcing your security position. You do not want to be behind when it comes to IT Security.  

You need to protect the business you are building! Stop taking shortcuts and invest in professional IT and security solutions. Not simple band aid fixes.
